We started with a cross-bred cowherd, of Angus, Tarentaise, Hereford and Shorthorn influence. After trying Angus and Gelbvieh bulls for a few years, we switched to Galloway bulls in 2004, when we switched to June calving, as Mother Nature intended. Our first Galloway bulls came from Russ & Cheryl Horvey of Delburne, Alberta, and Earl Jackson of Lacombe, Alberta. These 2 changes would change the direction of the ranch forever. Galloway babies hit the ground running and grow fast. The cows calving in warmer weather on the lushest grass of the growing season, were fat, healthy, and truly seemed more comfortable doing their jobs as Mommas. We knew then, that we had taken a huge step in the right direction.

We also chose to reassess how the cows were fed year round, so that now, our cows truly are grazers. They do not consume any ‘processed’ feedstuffs, other than salt and mineral supplements. We do not feed any grain to the herd, they simply eat grass in spring, summer and fall, or baled grass/alfalfa hay when it’s winter. This is how cows evolved, and we are simply giving them the opportunity to showcase their natural ability to turn the soil’s goodness, into nutritious beef.

However, after making these changes, we became more and more disappointed with the prices we were seeing for our calves at auction. After all, we felt we had a vastly improved product. We had healthier calves than we used to, from an excellent genetic base due to strict culling and proper selection of bulls and replacement heifers. So to take the same prices we were getting before, even though our costs were lower, was disheartening to say the least. So began our journey into our direct-marketing. We sold our first direct-market beef in the fall of 2007. It is all free of growth hormones and antibiotics, finished on a low-grain, high-roughage diet. We work with select local abattoirs to ensure the highest quality workmanship in the processing of our beef, to give you the customer, a superb product every time.

We have plans to continue our direct-marketing venture, as we believe it should be, including quantities of 100% grass-finished beef. We are very proud to offer healthy beef raised in an eco-friendly production model, to health- and environmentally conscientious consumers. We are also proud to have consumers take a keen interest in the health benefits of our food, and help them learn more about the food we produce as a society. For it is our firm belief that many, if not most, of the health problems plaguing modern society today, could all be solved by food grown on healthy soils by FAMILY FARMERS. That is why we are proud members of the Celtic Natural Beef Alliance. We’re a group of backwoods philosophers, barnyard visionaries and just plain good folks, who share a dream of working together to promote and market the highest-quality, most nutritious beef products available anywhere – from nowhere else but down on the farm.
